Bahram Jalali is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at UCLA. He is a Fellow if IEEE and the Optical Society of America, and the Chair of the Los Angeles Chapter of the IEEE Lasers and Electro Optics Society (LEOS). His research interests include silicon photonics and techniques for ultra fast data generation and capture. He has published over 200 scientific papers and holds 6 US patents. He is the recipient of the 2007 R.W. Wood Prize from the Optical Society of America. In 2005, he was chosen by the Scientific American Magazine as the 50 Leaders Shaping the Future of Technology. His work in demonstration of the first silicon laser was cited by the MIT Technology Review magazine as the top 10 technology trends in 2005. While on leave from UCLA from 1999-2001, Dr. Jalali founded Cognet Microsystems, a Los Angeles based fiber optic component company. He served as the company’s CEO, President and Chairman, from its inception through acquisition by Intel Corporation in 2001. From 2001-2004, he was a consultant for Intel Corporation. Dr. Jalali serves on the Board of Trustees of the California Science Center. He has received the BridgGate 20 Award for his contributions to the southern California economy.

Professor Yin Xiao, a dental specialist (BDSc 1986 and MDSc 1991), started his research career in 2000 (PhD from the University of Queensland) and has been the tenured professor at Queensland University of Technology since 2005. He is the Founder and the Director of the Australia-China Centre for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (ACCTERM) established in 2013 and the Joint Research Centre of functional biomaterials for tissue and organ replacement. Among the awards and honors, he has received are Fellow of IEEE and Fellow of IET, the Outstanding Research Professor Fellowship from the National Science Council (NSC), Republic of China, distinguish service award from Institute of Electrical Engineering Society, the Optical Engineering Medal from Optical Engineering Society, Distinguish Electrical Engineering professor award from Chinese Institute of Electrical Engineering Society, and Distinguish Engineering professor award from the Chinese Institute of Engineers. He received the ASIA’s Education Excellence Awards from Le Meridien Singapore and International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM) Fellow from Sweden.

Gil Gonçalves received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Aveiro in 2012, with a thesis dedicated to nanocomposite materials for biomedical application. His current work is primarily focused on the control of nanoprecipitation, grain-boundary nano-segregation, and atomic occupation by using multiple state-of-the-art techniques, such as the 3D atom probe tomography (3D-APT), high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM), and 3D printing. During the past 5 years, he has published many research articles in various top journals, like Science (2), Advanced Materials, Nature communications, Acta Materialia, etc. He has worked as the core member of the Hong Kong 3D-APT Unit since 2018, and became the member of the AAAS and China Materials Research Society recently.

Dr. Gernot S. Pomrenke is program manager for Optoelectronics, Photonics and Nanotechnology at the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) in Arlington VA. Within his national and international portfolio he explores nanophotonics, including plasmonics and metamaterials, to manipulate and exploit light-matter interactions to increase the performance of optoelectronic components. Other major portfolio thrusts include Silicon Photonics, Integrated Photonics, Reconfigurable Photonics as well as Terahertz Technology and Quantum Computing.
